SS United States Sinking Scheduled for Second Week of November Off Destin
Okaloosa County officials expect to sink the historic ocean liner SS United States about 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin during the second week of November, weather permitting. The nearly 1,000-foot vessel, which set a trans-Atlantic speed record on its 1952 maiden voyage, will become the world's largest artificial reef. County officials say the project aims to create an environmental resource and generate millions of dollars annually in tourism spending for local scuba shops, charter fishing boats, and hotels.
