Broward Commissioners Vote to Sue Sheriff Over Facility Access

Broward County commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday to authorize the County Attorney's Office to pursue legal action against Sheriff Gregory Tony's office to secure access to county-owned facilities, including the Research, Development and Training Center (RDTC). The vote followed a Monday confrontation in which commissioners were denied entry to the sheriff's headquarters for an inspection. The dispute is part of a broader conflict over BSO spending, with Commissioner Steve Geller citing approximately $885 million in county allocations and funding increases ranging from 3.1% to 8.7% for BSO versus smaller or negative changes for other agencies. Sheriff Tony rejected the commission's authority to conduct unannounced inspections, calling the move a political stunt, while County Attorney Annika Ashton said she was unaware of any criminal investigation involving commissioners that Tony referenced as justification.

Broward Sheriff Denies County Mayor Access to BSO Facility Amid $870M Budget Dispute

Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony escalated his dispute with county commissioners by posting a series of Instagram videos on October 9 defending first-responder pay and rejecting what he called the county's "lies," then denying County Mayor Mark Bogen entry to the BSO training facility on Monday, October 12. The confrontation followed an October 6 commission meeting that indefinitely deferred a $5.8 million budget supplement for dispatch salaries and discussed audit findings on BSO law enforcement at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Tony suspended negotiations over BSO's proposed $870 million core budget on October 10, citing an ongoing Florida Office of Statewide Prosecution investigation that issued subpoenas to all nine commissioners in September. The dispute centers on whether county commissioners can audit the independently elected sheriff's office and scrutinize spending at its multimillion-dollar training center.

Man Charged With First-Degree Murder After Fatal Stabbing in Tamarac

Manuel Farfan-Cabello, 28, was charged with first-degree murder after stabbing his mother, 57-year-old Ylda Cabello-Ynocente, to death at their Tamarac home on Oct. 9, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Farfan-Cabello called 911 himself and told a dispatcher he had stabbed her three to four hours earlier; deputies found approximately 30 stab wounds on the victim. The arrest report notes that family members said Farfan-Cabello had previously been diagnosed with psychosis and schizophrenia, though authorities had not independently verified that history through medical documentation. A judge denied him bond, and his family is working to return Cabello-Ynocente's body to Peru.

Fort Lauderdale Increases Enforcement in Himmarshee District After Recent Violence

Fort Lauderdale police announced increased enforcement in the Himmarshee Entertainment District along Las Olas Boulevard near SW Second Avenue and SW Second Street, citing recent violence and underage drinking. Police Chief William Schultz detailed nighttime patrol surges, targeted operations, light towers, and metal barricades, while Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan reported more midnight-to-4 a.m. emergency calls involving 18-to-24-year-old "pass-outs." The crackdown follows incidents including a September shooting during a fight, a July parking garage shooting, and a December 2025 incident where five people were shot outside Dicey Riley's Irish Pub. Fort Lauderdale will hold a grand opening ceremony Thursday at 10 a.m. for the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center, a $666 million facility at 3501 W. The new plant uses nanofiltration and ion exchange technology to produce up to 50 million gallons of clear drinking water daily, eliminating the yellow tint residents have long noticed. Built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, it serves customers in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Tamarac, Davie, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Sea Ranch Lakes and Port Everglades. City officials say some customers may notice temporary water color and taste changes through the end of 2026 during the phased transition; Fiveash will be decommissioned and converted to a storage and distribution center.

Pembroke Park Mayor Faces Removal Hearing Over Residency Allegations

Pembroke Park Mayor Geoffrey Jacobs appeared before Broward Circuit Court Judge Shari Africk-Olefson on Monday to contest removal from office over allegations he does not reside in the city as required by the town charter. Town attorneys argue Jacobs moved to a Fort Pierce home in 2025, obtained a mortgage requiring residency there for a year, filed a homestead exemption, and purchased vehicle insurance through a St. Lucie County address. Jacobs and his attorney maintain he lives at a Broward mobile home off Hallandale Beach Boulevard, while his wife testified to the same. The judge is expected to issue a decision sometime next week.
