A letter to the editor from a Village of Tamarind Grove resident discusses Florida's proposed Amendment 3, which would reduce homestead property taxes. The writer states Sumter County's budget is estimated to lose $71 million in annual revenue by 2028, representing 38% of its current general fund. The letter notes that more than 50 organizations oppose the amendment, including the Florida Professional Firefighters, Florida Sheriffs Association, and Florida PTA, while only Florida Realtors supports it among nonpartisan groups. Three major credit rating agencies have warned they would lower Florida local government credit scores if the amendment passes, increasing bond costs for roads and schools. Services at risk include library branches, parks, veterans programs, animal control, after-school programs, and mosquito control.
