SeaWorld Orlando Closes Mako Coaster After Fatal Accident at Six Flags Over Georgia
A 42-year-old man, Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, died Monday after being thrown from his seat on a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia; witnesses identified the ride as Goliath. In response, SeaWorld Orlando shut down its Mako coaster on Tuesday out of what it called an abundance of caution, while keeping all other rides operational. Both coasters were built by Swiss firm Bolliger & Mabillard and share a similar lap-bar restraint system without shoulder restraints. Six Flags temporarily closed nine similar coasters across six parks in the U.S. and Canada. Universal Orlando Resort did not immediately respond to questions about whether it would close The Incredible Hulk or other B&M-built coasters at its Central Florida parks.
