Florida Sets Nov. 19 Execution Date for 1991 Monroe County Double Murder
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a death warrant Oct. 22 for Thomas Mitchell Overton, 70, convicted in the Aug. 22, 1991, murders of Susan "Missy" MacIvor, 29, and Michael MacIvor, 30, near TavernAero Airport in Monroe County's Upper Keys. The MacIvors, expecting their first child, were strangled during a home invasion; Missy MacIvor was a third-grade teacher at Key Largo Elementary School. Overton's execution is scheduled for Nov. 19 at Florida State Prison in Raiford and would be the first Monroe County death-penalty execution in Florida this year. DNA evidence linked Overton to the crime scene, and he was arrested in 1996 after a jury convicted him in 1999.
