Jersey Avenue Repaving Underway Since Oct. 14; Overnight Closures Through November

The City of Hoboken and City of Jersey City announced joint repaving of Jersey Avenue between 14th Street in Jersey City and Harrison Street in Hoboken, beginning on or about Oct. 14, weather permitting. The project includes utility connections, milling, paving, and new striping, with overnight work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to minimize daytime disruption. During the week of Oct. 19, southbound Jersey Avenue traffic will be closed between 14th and 18th Streets while northbound access into Hoboken remains open; paving moves north of 18th Street the following week. The previously planned full closure of nearby Grove Street is postponed to Nov. 2 at 8 a.m., after Jersey Avenue work is completed, to accommodate increased detour traffic from the Rebuild by Design Hudson River Project.

Hudson County Investigates Corrections Officers' ICE Contact in Jersey City Resident's Detainment

Hudson County is investigating whether Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation employees interacted with ICE during the detainment of Raul Raagas, a 62-year-old Jersey City resident pulled over July 24 in Palisades Park on a child-support warrant. The incident occurred despite Executive Order Number Eight, signed by County Executive Craig Guy in January, which prohibits county employee collaboration with ICE. Activist Courtney Walker filed an OPRA request seeking reports of ICE contact and found no responsive documents, prompting questions at the October 8 Board of Commissioners meeting. County Counsel Alberico De Pierro confirmed the Law Department investigation is ongoing, corrective actions were taken as of October 8, and retraining for corrections officers on ICE-interaction protocols is underway. The board also approved a $150,000 contract with the New Jersey Consortium for Immigrant Children for legal aid services running through September 30.
