Texas Teachers Push Education Issues in Gubernatorial Race Ahead of Nov. 3 Election
With early voting underway ahead of the Nov. 3 Texas gubernatorial election, education policy has emerged as a central issue between Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and Democrat Gina Hinojosa. The race centers on the state's 2025 voucher program, teacher compensation, and state takeovers of Fort Worth ISD and Lake Worth ISD announced in October 2025. Texas employs more than 400,000 public school teachers and staff; multiple educators' groups have endorsed Hinojosa while Abbott's campaign highlights $4 billion in teacher pay raises and the largest day-one school choice program in the nation.
