Trump Administration Seeks Supreme Court Reversal of Big Bend Border Wall Halt
The Trump administration filed an emergency appeal with the Supreme Court on Wednesday asking justices to lift a lower court order halting border wall construction in Texas's Big Bend region. Judge Kathleen Cardone issued the preliminary injunction on Oct. 2, stopping work across the roughly 500-mile project area while litigation over sweeping environmental waivers proceeds. Opponents—including ranchers, residents, business owners, and environmentalists—argue the Big Bend sector does not meet the statutory definition of a high illegal-entry area that would justify bypassing regulations. The government contends Congress granted the Homeland Security secretary broad waiver authority in 1996 legislation and warns that leaving the region without barriers could funnel illegal immigration there.
