Tucson Unified School District Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo recommended closing Gertrude Cragin Elementary at 2945 N. Tucson Blvd. and relocating students to Blenman Elementary at 1695 N. Country Club Rd. in Midtown Tucson, starting August 2027. The Wednesday announcement was the third of up to 10 potential school closures driven by declining enrollment and budget constraints, following recommendations for Hudlow Elementary and Alice F. Dunham Elementary earlier in the week. A press conference is scheduled for Oct. 27, and the TUSD Governing Board will vote on all recommendations at a Dec. 8 meeting after at least two study sessions. Parents at public meetings raised concerns about class sizes, program availability, staff layoffs, and student transition support.

School board elections in Pima County, Arizona, face historically low voter participation, with more than 250,000 potential votes undervoted in Tucson Unified School District alone in 2024. Governing board races will occur this year in Amphitheater, Pima JTED, Tanque Verde, Tucson Unified, Sunnyside and Sahuarita school districts, while candidates in other Pima County districts run uncontested. Outgoing Catalina Foothills board member Amy Krauss and Pima County Superintendent Dustin Williams cited limited funding, chronic absenteeism and declining enrollment as key issues facing elected trustees. Candidate Elizabeth Slater, running for the Amphitheater Unified School District board, said many residents misunderstand the non-partisan role of school boards and their direct impact on property values and workforce development.

A sorority member at the University of Arizona in Tucson alleged she was sexually assaulted by two men at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house on Aug. 26, according to search warrant records posted by KOLD-TV. The university had suspended activities for all 21 of its fraternities amid reports of misconduct including assault and hazing, though suspensions were later lifted for most chapters after mandatory meetings with the dean of students. The national Sigma Phi Epsilon organization said it suspended involved members pending investigation and would expel any member found responsible. The article also reports separate sexual assault allegations at Cornell University's Chi Phi fraternity (October 2024) and at two University of Chicago fraternities, Alpha Delta Phi and Alpha Epsilon Pi.
