LD 17 Candidates Debate Prop 144 Ahead of Nov. 3 Election

House candidates for Arizona Legislative District 17—Republicans John Winchester and Rep. Rachel Keshel, Democrats Holly Lyon and Rep. Kevin Volk—debated Thursday at a Citizens Clean Elections Commission forum on Proposition 144, which would require government-issued ID for all voting including mail-in ballots, restrict foreign election money, and require same-day ballot counting. Volk and Lyon oppose the measure, calling it burdensome to the roughly 80% of Arizona voters who use mail-in ballots, while Keshel and Winchester support it as a trust-restoring reform. Senate candidate Edgar Soto (D) also opposes Prop 144; Republican Christopher King did not attend. Candidates additionally discussed a contested 600-acre data center campus in Marana, where a Pima County judge ruled in May that initiative language was defective and the ruling is on appeal. Early voting for the Nov. 3 general election began Oct. 7.
