Advocates Urge Comments on Census Proposal by Nov. 2 Deadline
Community advocates and city leaders are warning that a federal proposal to exclude noncitizens from the 2030 Census could negatively impact resource allocation for police, fire, transit, and federal grants. Tempe Councilwoman Doreen Garlid highlighted that excluding international students, who comprise a significant portion of Arizona State University's population, would jeopardize budget planning for at least a decade. Critics argue the changes violate the 14th Amendment and remove critical data used to address health disparities and gerrymandering. Local officials are encouraged to submit comments to the federal government by November 2 regarding the potential impact on their communities.
