Dozens of students, parents, and community members gathered outside Sonoma Valley High School on Tuesday to protest a Sonoma Valley Unified School District board decision prohibiting schools from flying the Pride flag. The board voted 3-2 to permit only U.S. and California flags at district schools, with Board President David Bell, Catarina Landry, and Jason Lehman voting in favor and Anne Ching and Gerardo Guzman opposing. Bell said the original 2019 approval of the Pride flag lacked a formal process for other groups to apply. Students and supporters argued the flag represented inclusion for LGBTQ+ youth, while the board framed its decision as a procedural correction.

Eliza Hemenway's documentary "Thy Neighbor," filmed along the Joe Rodota Trail between Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, premieres Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Sebastiani Theatre in Sonoma, followed by a Sunday screening at the United Nations Association Film Festival in Palo Alto. The film chronicles events leading to the early 2020 clearing of what was Sonoma County's largest homeless encampment, where over 250 people had camped on the 8.5-mile county-owned trail before the Board of Supervisors declared a homeless emergency and allocated $12 million for rehousing. Up to 60 residents were transferred to an emergency shelter at Los Guilicos Villages in Santa Rosa, while others scattered across the county, forming smaller encampments that prompted ongoing evictions.
