A proposed residential development at Thurber Lane and Soquel Drive in Live Oak would convert 6.26 acres of wetland and natural habitat into five buildings totaling 173 rental units and 251 parking spaces, according to a community letter published in Good Times. The project, overseen by the California Housing Finance Agency, has drawn concerns over riparian habitat disruption, removal of 13 trees, traffic on narrow Thurber Lane, sewer capacity, and the Mid-County Groundwater Basin's "critical overdraft" status; no Environmental Impact Report has been mentioned. Public comments must be submitted by Sunday, October 18, 2026, to CalHFA. Separately, Dignity Health Dominican Hospital announced it is the first hospital in Santa Cruz County to join the Golden State Start initiative, providing 400 free Baby2Baby diapers to every newborn delivered at the facility.
