Bomb Squad Shuts Down Rep. Lofgren's San Jose Office; Suspicious Envelopes Sent to Multiple South Bay Congressmembers

A bomb squad shut down U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren's office at 600 N. First Street in San Jose on Friday after a suspicious envelope was received just after 11 a.m.; SJPD retrieved a substance later determined to be non-hazardous. Emergency crews also responded to Rep. Ro Khanna's Santa Clara office Friday afternoon, while a staffer at Rep. Jimmy Panetta's Santa Cruz office found white powder (later confirmed as sugar and flour) inside an envelope opened Friday morning. The incidents are part of a federal investigation into more than 100 suspicious letters sent to election offices and congressional offices nationwide. All staff members were reported safe, and no suspect information was immediately available.
