SF Considers Ban on Lockable Butane Torches Linked to Fires, Deaths

San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman is developing legislation to prohibit stores from selling inexpensive plastic lockable butane torches, which the San Francisco Fire Department says have caused at least one death, three fires this year, and $3.2 million in property losses over five years. The devices gained popularity since 2020 for producing a continuous flame, and fire officials warn the locking mechanism poses danger if users fall asleep or pass out while the torch remains lit. Vancouver banned similar lighters in 2024 after six deaths and 79 injuries between January 2023 and April 2024; no U.S. city has enacted such a ban. The proposed legislation would impose a $500 fine on first-time selling violations and $1,000 for subsequent ones, while preserving legitimate commercial uses such as restaurant kitchen torches.
