San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman is developing legislation to prohibit stores from selling inexpensive plastic lockable butane torches, which the San Francisco Fire Department says have caused at least one death, three fires this year, and $3.2 million in property losses over five years. The devices gained popularity since 2020 for producing a continuous flame, and fire officials warn the locking mechanism poses danger if users fall asleep or pass out while the torch remains lit. Vancouver banned similar lighters in 2024 after six deaths and 79 injuries between January 2023 and April 2024; no U.S. city has enacted such a ban. The proposed legislation would impose a $500 fine on first-time selling violations and $1,000 for subsequent ones, while preserving legitimate commercial uses such as restaurant kitchen torches.

The California Alliance of Legal Interpreters union, representing 91 staff interpreters across 15 Northern California Superior Courts (Region 2), announced Monday that 96% of members approved a strike authorization after eight months of bargaining broke down. The union alleges the courts favor contracted interpreters over staff interpreters in violation of state law, contributing to 42% staff turnover over nine years. The 15 Superior Courts said they remain committed to negotiating and proposed mediation, pledging to continue essential language services if a strike occurs.

Mayor Daniel Lurie announced that Nordstrom Rack will open a 50,000-square-foot store at 2 Stockton Street, at the corner of Stockton and Market streets near Union Square, with an opening expected in fall 2027. The Seattle-based retailer previously served as anchor tenant at San Francisco Centre mall and operated a Nordstrom Rack at 5th and Market Streets; both locations closed in 2023. A smaller Nordstrom Local store on Fillmore Street currently handles online pickups, returns, tailoring, and styling appointments but does not carry traditional retail inventory. Co-CEO Erik Nordstrom cited the company's long history in San Francisco and downtown's building momentum as reasons for the return.
