Box Elder Traffic Counts Done; Major Corridor Design Faces Two-Year Timeline

Box Elder, S.D., removed traffic counters from four intersections Oct. 13-15 to guide design of Highway 1416, Radar Hill Road to the airport, and Cheyenne Boulevard as a new east-west arterial corridor. City Engineer Scott Lange said federal funding has been secured for the design phase, which will take up to two years due in part to floodplain and FEMA environmental requirements tied to Box Elder Creek. Growth from Ellsworth Air Force Base and regional affordability are cited as key traffic drivers. All three corridors will include walking trails and sidewalks. Near-term improvements include new signals at Reagan/Liberty near Exit 67 and Mall Drive/Elk Vale going to construction next year, with service expected about a year later.
