The city of Deadwood, South Dakota, has received official certification from the National Park Service through the federal Certified Local Government Program. The town's historic preservation commission qualifies to review National Register nominations locally, receive assistance from the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office, and apply for grants to fund local projects. Deadwood is the newest community in South Dakota to earn the designation. City planning, zoning and historic preservation officer Kevin Kuchenbecker said the city values its partnership with the state office.
