Flood Warning Lingers Monday in Four Corners; San Juan River Near 1927 Crest
A flood warning remained active Monday across the Four Corners region as the San Juan River in New Mexico stood 1.5 feet above its 23-foot flood stage and was expected to crest at 31 feet later that day, approaching the Sept. 10, 1927 record of 32 feet. One flooding-related death was reported in Santa Fe on Saturday when a female passenger was swept away during a water rescue of her family crossing a flooded arroyo. Residents in Bluff, Utah, were allowed to return Monday after weekend evacuations, while many remained evacuated in the Farmington area with hundreds without power. Officials warned that floodwater could be contaminated with chemicals and raw sewage after wastewater facilities in the Shiprock area of the Navajo Nation sustained damage. San Juan County, New Mexico, had not released official figures on homes damaged or total evacuations as officials conducted house-to-house hazard checks expected to take days.
