Man Convicted of Murder, Rape in 2012 UNC Student Killing
Miguel Salguero Olivares, 33, was convicted Friday of first-degree murder, rape, sexual offense and burglary for the September 2012 beating death of Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was sentenced to life without parole on the murder charge plus 45-65 years on the other counts. Prosecutors relied on DNA, fingerprint and palm-print evidence found at the scene; the defense challenged crime-scene processing and suggested consensual contact days earlier. Hedgepeth's parents delivered victim impact statements expressing forgiveness for the convicted man.
