The Ackland Art Museum at UNC-Chapel Hill has received a $20 million lead grant from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust toward its planned $70 million expansion, according to a September 24 university release. The grant honors Thomas S. "Tom" Kenan III's nearly 50 years of arts philanthropy at Carolina. The 40,000-square-foot project—UNC Board of Trustees approved advance planning spending authority in July—will double the museum's footprint and create a central green space linking the Ackland, Hanes Arts Center, Kenan Music building, and Memorial Hall along the campus's northern edge. Museum Director Shalini Le Gall said the expansion will support larger exhibitions, enhanced teaching programs, and research collaborations. The planning process will include engagement with campus and Chapel Hill stakeholders to strengthen connections between the museum at 101 South Columbia Street and downtown Franklin Street.

The Chapel Hill Town Council approved a Wednesday proposal to amend the Meadowmont Master Land Use Plan, converting a parcel at 101 E. Barbee Chapel Road from commercial to residential use for up to 12 dwelling units in The Cedars of Chapel Hill retirement community. Scott Murray, president of Scott Murray Land Planning, Inc., said the change addresses housing needs at The Cedars and eliminates an unneeded office space owned by UNC. Council member Melissa McCullough raised concerns that the 12-units-per-acre limit may be too restrictive, though other members supported the modification as compatible with the surrounding community. Orange County Department on Aging director Janice Tyler said the development aligns with the county's Master Aging Plan for age-friendly, walkable communities.

Speakers at the tribunal included international lawyer Jonathan Kuttab and Freedom Flotilla passenger Philip Tottenham. WILPFUS executive director Linda Low said the tribunal's grand jury expects to release a finding statement within four to six weeks.
