The Yolo County Assessor's Office is warning residents about scams involving a nonexistent "IRS Form 1098-SR" that fraudsters claim can reduce or freeze property taxes for older homeowners. The false claims have spread through social media posts, AI-generated videos, and phone calls. Assessor Jesse Salinas urged residents not to share personal or financial information with anyone offering to file the form. He noted that legitimate California programs such as Proposition 19 provisions and the $7,000 Homeowners' Exemption exist but are unrelated to any federal form.

The California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways increased the two-year Mussel Fee Sticker from $16 to $42, a 162.5% hike effective Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. The increase responds to invasive golden mussels first discovered in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in October 2024, which prompted emergency declarations in Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin and Kern counties. Boaters purchasing stickers in odd-numbered years pay $42; those buying in even-numbered years pay $21. Existing sticker holders do not owe the difference until their current sticker expires at vessel registration renewal on Dec. 31 of each odd year. State Parks said additional revenue will fund boat inspections, decontamination, monitoring and grants to waterway managers, though the announcement did not specify projected revenue or success metrics.

A Davis-based blog post explains how to interpret commercial slate mailers versus official party voter guides for upcoming elections. The article analyzes specific mailers received by a Woodland resident, detailing the legal disclaimers required by California law and identifying paid endorsements from candidates like Eric Jones and Dotty Pritchard. It contrasts these with the Yolo County Democratic Party's voter guide, which lists recommended candidates without paid advertising. The piece provides instructions on using the Secretary of State’s Cal-Access website to verify campaign financing for slate mailer appearances.

The Woodland Police Department released body-worn camera video on Friday, Oct. 23, of a Sept. 18 officer-involved shooting that killed 29-year-old Luke Adam Figueroa-Weaver at his family's Johnston Street residence following a nearly two-hour standoff and neighborhood lockdown. The incident began when Figueroa-Weaver's mother called 911 to report her son was in an apparent mental-health crisis and armed with a rifle. Three officers—William Ojakian, Liviu Sirbu, and Wayne Terry—discharged their weapons after police say Figueroa-Weaver opened the front door and failed to comply with commands; they were placed on paid administrative leave but have since returned to duty. The Davis Police Department is investigating whether the use of deadly force was justified, as required by state law for critical incidents involving another agency.
