Prescribed Burn Near Custer Targets Dead Timber from 2000 Jasper Fire
Firefighters completed a 702-acre prescribed burn Thursday in the Antihorse Project area of the Black Hills National Forest, about 12 miles west of Custer, South Dakota. The operation targeted dead and fallen trees left by the 2000 Jasper Fire to reduce fuel loads and lower future wildfire risks. Forest officials say personnel will continue monitoring the site, and residents nearby may see smoke for several days following the completed burn.
