Springdale Residents Oppose Proposed 47-Acre AI Data Center
Residents of Springdale borough in northeastern Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, are opposing a proposed 47-acre hyperscale data center by Dynamo DC on the former site of a coal-fired power plant that closed in 2022. Springdale's council voted 5-2 in December to approve a conditional use permit for the facility, which is planned to draw up to 240 megawatts from the regional grid and go online by 2029. A residents' group called Save Allegheny Valley Environment has formed to protest the project, citing concerns about noise, water usage, and electricity shortages. Separately, the 15-member Allegheny County Council voted unanimously in September to ban data centers over 25 megawatts on any county-owned land.
