Marysville Save Mart Murder Suspect Pleads Not Guilty; Next Hearing Nov. 4

Samuel E. Hartbower pleaded not guilty in Yuba County court on Tuesday to the stabbing death of 64-year-old Douglas L. Eid, assistant manager of a Marysville Save Mart, and the injury of shopper Robert Balderaz. The Yuba County District Attorney stated that initial evidence indicated Hartbower attacked Eid with a knife after being asked to leave the store, and that Balderaz intervened and suffered two lacerations requiring stitches. A judge denied bail, citing risk to society, and assigned Hartbower a public defender. His next court date is set for Nov. 4. Eid, originally from Clearlake, had over 25 years of grocery management experience.
