Sutter County Details El Niño Flood Preparedness for Residents
Sutter County emergency officials say a strong El Niño is forecast but its impact on the county remains uncertain, noting that of six very strong El Niño events since 1950, outcomes ranged from dry to very wet. The county has conducted staff training exercises and participates in Department of Water Resources flood coordination workshops through November, with additional flood-focused exercises scheduled for December. Residents can access up to 25 sandbags per household at county locations, monitor road closures at Sutter.gov/roadclosures, and sign up for emergency alerts at bepreparedsutter.org. Officials identified recurring flood-prone areas including northwest and west of Live Oak, the Nicolaus area, and between Sutter and Meridian, with 15 roads experiencing flooding issues every year.
