Man Indicted in Mother's Death from Neglect in Tuscaloosa County
Jonathan Chad Simmons was indicted on manslaughter and second-degree elder abuse charges in the death of his 76-year-old mother, Brenda Hallman Simmons, in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. Deputies responded to the 13000 block of Alabama Highway 216 on May 16, where they found her alive but unresponsive; she died days later from sepsis caused by complications from multiple open bedsores. Medical staff reported feces and insects in her hair and signs she had not been bathed, while investigators described the shared residence as excessively dirty and unsanitary. Simmons admitted he was his mother's caretaker and had not taken her to a doctor in over a year. He is held in Tuscaloosa County Jail with $30,000 bond.
