El Dorado County Supervisors Appoint Eric Palmberg as Sheriff

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 on Tuesday to appoint Undersheriff Eric Palmberg as the new sheriff, succeeding retiring Sheriff Jeff Leikauf. The appointment bypassed a competitive recruitment process because Leikauf provided only about 10 weeks' notice before his December retirement date. While Supervisor Brian Veerkamp opposed the move due to lack of public input, other supervisors cited past practice and the need to address community divisiveness. Palmberg is scheduled to take office on Dec. 26.

LGBTQ+ Residents Face Limited Specialty Healthcare Access in Tahoe-Truckee Area

A Tribune survey of 15 LGBTQ+ people across the Tahoe Basin found over 60% leave the area for healthcare, with 70% seeking specialty services such as gender-affirming treatments and sexual health testing unavailable locally. South Lake Tahoe resident Anthony Wolf drives a nearly four-hour, 188-mile round trip to Roseville for hormone therapy bloodwork because Barton Hospital lacks an endocrinologist, while Truckee residents report barriers including PrEP billing confusion and long primary-care wait times. The median total commute time for LGBTQ+ responsive care in the region was four hours or more, with respondents citing cost, lack of cultural knowledge among providers, and insurance-billing complexity as key obstacles. Barton's chief medical officer said referrals to other locations are common practice, while TFHS clarified it does offer rectal swab testing.

Midweek Storm Brings Rain, Possible High-Elevation Snow to Tahoe Oct. 21-22

A mild storm is expected to bring rain and a chance of high-elevation snow to the Tahoe region on Wednesday and Thursday, with precipitation of a few tenths to as much as 1 inch possible by Thursday night, according to OpenSnow forecaster Bryan Allegrato. Snow levels are expected to remain above 8,000 to 9,000 feet for most of the storm, limiting snowfall to the highest elevations, though levels could drop toward the end of the system. The National Weather Service recommends drivers prepare vehicles for winter travel by checking tire tread, windshield wipers, battery condition, keeping chains on hand, and inspecting emergency kits. High pressure is forecast to return over the weekend with drier conditions, while long-range models suggest a more active pattern could develop around the end of October into early November.
