Cooley Fire in Sonoma County Grows to 1,156 Acres; 23% Contained

A prescribed burn on Cooley Ranch property north of Lake Sonoma escaped containment Friday evening around 5 p.m., growing to 1,156 acres by Monday morning per Cal Fire. The fire is 23% contained, with crews operating two branches—Elkhorn to the north and Rockpile to the south—across seven divisions in rugged terrain inaccessible to heavy equipment. No structures, power lines, or critical utilities are currently threatened, though a dense marine layer creating an inversion at approximately 1,000 feet limits aerial visibility and fire activity above that elevation remains dynamic. The original planned burn was slated for 850 acres Friday and up to 500 acres Saturday in an area south of Yorkville and west of Cloverdale. Cal Fire is investigating the cause of the escape.
