Students Protest Sonoma Valley School Board Vote to Ban Pride Flags
Dozens of students, parents, and community members gathered outside Sonoma Valley High School on Tuesday to protest a Sonoma Valley Unified School District board decision prohibiting schools from flying the Pride flag. The board voted 3-2 to permit only U.S. and California flags at district schools, with Board President David Bell, Catarina Landry, and Jason Lehman voting in favor and Anne Ching and Gerardo Guzman opposing. Bell said the original 2019 approval of the Pride flag lacked a formal process for other groups to apply. Students and supporters argued the flag represented inclusion for LGBTQ+ youth, while the board framed its decision as a procedural correction.
