A federal judge in Oakland heard arguments Monday from the cities of San Francisco and Santa Clara, voting rights groups, and a labor union seeking to bar immigration investigators from using voter-registration lists they call deeply flawed. The plaintiffs allege violations of the Administrative Procedures Act and Voting Rights Act, citing armed agents approaching homes and the risk that U.S. citizens could be wrongly targeted. Federal authorities recently charged 28 lawful permanent residents in California with voting illegally or improper registration, and the Trump administration sued California over its refusal to segregate ballots of roughly 20,000 individuals flagged as possible noncitizens. Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin took the case under submission Monday, with a ruling expected in the coming days ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

San Jose Police arrested Kelvin Chiu, a Fremont resident and adult athletics trainer, after a 16-year-old reported he sexually assaulted her during treatment for a sports-related injury at an unnamed high school in San Jose on Oct. 8. Officers searching his home the next day found child sexual abuse material on his phone, and he was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail. A police press release dated Oct. 14 warns that because Chiu held a position of trust at a school, there may be additional victims. Authorities ask anyone with information to contact the San José Police ICAC/Child Exploitation Detail Task Force at 408-277-3214.
