Advocacy Groups Report Increased ICE Detentions Across San Luis Obispo County

Local immigrant advocacy organizations 805UndocuFund and Ice Out of SLO County report a recent uptick in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across San Luis Obispo County, with verified detentions since Friday in San Miguel, Nipomo, and Oceano. Both groups reference reports of an alleged 45-day federal enforcement effort called "Operation Safe California," originally described by the Washington Examiner; DHS was contacted for confirmation but its full statement was not included in the article. SLO County Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg cited the detention of a parent of a local middle school student and criticized the lack of transparency from federal agents. As of Saturday, advocacy groups report 218 people taken into ICE custody in SLO County since early 2025, compared with 1,270 in neighboring Santa Barbara County. Organizations are urging affected families to seek legal assistance and community resources.

SLO County Judge Grants Mental Health Diversion in Paso Robles Cat Cruelty Case

San Luis Obispo County Superior Court Judge Catherine Swysen approved a mental health diversion program for Laurie Bryant, 63, the former manager of Paso Robles' Presidio Apartments where 40 dead cats were found in an abandoned unit in August 2024. Bryant was charged with seven felony counts of animal cruelty by the SLO County District Attorney's Office on Feb. 10, 2025; she pleaded not guilty in March. Deputy District Attorney Hunter Starr objected to the diversion, arguing the law overlooks animal deaths by treating them differently from murder charges. Under the ruling, Bryant must undergo medication management, attend weekly therapy, and complete compliance checks with animal services regarding her four current pet cats for up to two years. Her next court hearing is set for Nov. 19.

Airport Commissioner Urges Paso Robles Council to Proceed with FAA Spaceport License

In a letter to the editor, Paso Robles Airport Commissioner Steven Beck advocates for the city to advance its FAA spaceport license application following an Oct. 6 council meeting where representatives from NASA Ames, Cal Poly, REACH, Travel Paso, and Far Flight Technologies voiced support. The licensing contract before the council included approximately $450,000 in designated economic development funds and $336,455 from the General Fund, while Cal Poly has received $1 million in federal funding for its Spaceport Training and Research Center. Councilman Chris Bausch voted against the next step after his proposal requiring direct repayment of city expenditures by spaceport tenants was rejected. Beck argues the spaceport will generate lease payments, tax revenue, and skilled jobs to diversify Paso Robles' economy.
