An explosive-level natural gas leak detected at 8:24 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, in front of 1015 Court St. in downtown San Luis Obispo prompted a shelter-in-place order at the Anderson Hotel and temporary evacuation of residents to the Ludwick Community Center. SoCalGas crews conducting routine surveys identified the leak after smelling natural gas; readings were above safe levels. Court Street closed to foot traffic from before 9 a.m. until about 11:30 a.m., and Monterey Street closed to cars from Osos to Morro streets during the same window. The SLO County Government Center remained open for Election Day ballot drop-offs throughout the incident.
