Contact with contaminated water may increase the risk of skin infections, respiratory illness, and gastrointestinal illness, with young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals at greater vulnerability. The department recommends avoiding areas near creeks, rivers, storm drains, and beaches where runoff visibly enters the ocean, noting pathogens may be present even when water appears clean. Current beach water quality information is available through SurfSafeSLO.
