Court Appoints Lawyer for Gaea Powell; Sentencing Set Nov. 4

Gaea Powell, a former Arroyo Grande mayoral candidate convicted by jury on nine counts of election fraud, had her sentencing postponed after requesting court-appointed counsel at the Oct. 19 hearing. Judge Timothy Covello re-assigned Public Defender Andrew Jennings to assist with sentencing only, rejecting most of Powell's pre-sentencing motions as not made in good faith. The charges stemmed from Powell registering to vote at an Arroyo Grande address in 2022 while living in an unincorporated area outside the city's jurisdiction. In a press statement, Powell alleged her prosecution was politically motivated and called for an independent review; DA Dan Dow said such claims should be addressed through normal legal channels including appeals. Sentencing is now scheduled for Nov. 4 at 8:30 a.m.
