Quincy Man Charged With Mailing White Powder Threats to Congress Members
Matthew Ungelsbee, 37, of Quincy, Illinois, was charged with mailing threatening communications and perpetrating a hoax after sending at least four envelopes containing a white powdery substance to members of Congress. The letters were postmarked in Springfield, Illinois, on Oct. 19, with the most recent received Oct. 23 at a U.S. senator's office bearing a handwritten note reading "HAH enjoy the gift." FBI agents interviewed Ungelsbee at his Quincy home on Sunday, Oct. 25, and he told them the substance was salt; testing confirmed it was not dangerous. The investigation began after an anonymous tipster reported overhearing him in a restaurant discussing the mailings on Oct. 16.
