Federal Judge Orders Iowa to Allow Satanic Temple Holiday Event at Capitol
Chief District Judge Stephanie M. Rose ordered Iowa state officials on Monday to approve a Satanic Temple Iowa application for a holiday event in the rotunda of the Iowa State Capitol within seven days, ruling the group likely succeeded on its free speech claim. The Satanic Temple sued in August after Republican-led state officials repeatedly denied their applications citing policies against gratuitous violence and obscene displays. The planned event includes Krampus costumes, caroling, children's coloring activities, and ornament making. Attorney General Brenna Bird's office said state officials intend to appeal the ruling.
