10-Year-Old Boy, Teacher Drown on School Trip at Lake Macbride State Park
A 10-year-old student named Ahmed Osman slipped into water flowing down the Coralville Reservoir spillway during a lunch break on a Sept. 22 School of the Wild field trip at Lake Macbride State Park in Johnson County, Iowa. Twenty-four-year-old Borlaug Elementary teacher Hannah Jorgensen jumped in to rescue him but was unable to save either child or herself; a bystander also attempted a rescue but could not reach them. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office recovered both bodies and is continuing its investigation. Students on the trip called 911 and alerted the bystander after Jorgensen left her phone on shore.
