Broward Commissioners Postpone Vote on Moving 911 Services from Sheriff's Office

The Broward County Commission postponed a vote during its Tuesday morning meeting to transition control of the county's Regional 911 System from the Broward Sheriff's Office to direct county management, scheduling it after midterm elections. The county already owns and funds the 911 center but BSO operates it; if approved, the transition would be complete by October 2027. The postponement comes amid an escalating budget and transparency dispute between commissioners and Sheriff Gregory Tony over the agency's $870 million budget. Last week, Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen was denied access to BSO's Research, Development and Training Center, prompting the commission to vote for legal action to secure facility access. On Sept. 22, commissioners separately voted to transition fire rescue from BSO to county control by 2028.
