Boca Raton Council Steers $125M Police Bond Language Toward Ballot Ahead of Oct. 27 Vote

At an Oct. 13 workshop, Boca Raton City Council members directed staff to bring a $125 million police headquarters bond ballot question that names a dedicated downtown facility while leaving the overall location open for post-election input, with a formal resolution vote set for Oct. 27 and a Dec. 4 deadline to submit language for the March 2027 election. The revised project is estimated at roughly $121 million for about 100,000 square feet, down from a $190 million proposal voters rejected in March; annual debt service would cost approximately $100.92 per average residential property. Council members also declined to begin filling Seat C after Yvette Drucker's Nov. 9 resignation, and Coconut Road residents asked the council to clarify whether a 2009 roof-height ordinance permits three-story homes in single-family neighborhoods. City Manager Mark Sohaney said a new headquarters could open by the first quarter of 2029, though he cautioned the timeline is soft.

PBSO Deputy Fatally Shoots Robbery Suspect in Boynton Beach Oct. 13

A Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy fatally shot a 54-year-old man on Jog Road south of Woolbright Road in Boynton Beach on Tuesday, Oct. 13, after a pursuit that began with a pizza delivery robbery in Lake Worth Beach the previous night, PBSO said. The suspect allegedly knelt behind concrete pillars and assumed what the agency described as a firing stance before the deputy fired; the advisory does not confirm whether he was armed or if a weapon was recovered. 25 Charged in Multi-County 'Operation Ice Breaker' Drug Trafficking Bust

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Tuesday that 25 people face charges following "Operation Ice Breaker," an undercover investigation into a drug trafficking organization operating across Broward, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie counties. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office began investigating in March after social media activity led to a local distributor, ultimately identifying major supplier Ariel Fernandez-Alonso, who reportedly received 50 to 60 kilograms of cocaine every 15 days shipped from California via freight carriers. Search warrants executed over the weekend across all three counties resulted in 19 arrests, with six suspects still at large, and seizure of at least 45 kilograms of cocaine along with oxycodone and fentanyl pills. Charges include trafficking in cocaine, drug trafficking, conspiracy to commit racketeering, and unlawful use of a two-way communications device, with multiple suspects facing 15-year mandatory minimum sentences if convicted.

Boca Raton CRA Approves Eight-Story Sanborn Private Club Downtown

Boca Raton's Community Redevelopment Agency voted 5-0 on Tuesday to approve The Sanborn, an approximately 54,681-square-foot eight-story private members club at 100 N.E. 1st Ave., across from Sanborn Square. The approval (Resolution CRP-25-01) authorizes demolition of a 1948 two-story building purchased for $10 million in March and construction of a club with a two-level automated underground valet garage holding 85 cars, supplemented by up to 98 off-site spaces at the not-yet-built Aletto parking structure. Four residents spoke at the hearing, raising concerns about traffic from three adjacent projects totaling an estimated 4,100 daily car trips and dependence on unbuilt parking infrastructure. The developer will widen the First Avenue sidewalk by about three feet and plant seven live oaks; the city will not issue a certificate of occupancy until all required parking is in place.
