High tides and powerful swells sent seawater onto coastal roadways in Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, and Long Beach, California. AAA automotive services manager Megan McKernan warned drivers not to attempt starting or driving vehicles whose undercarriage contacted salt water, as corrosion can damage electrical systems, sensors, and wiring for weeks or months after flooding recedes. Electric and hybrid vehicles face added risk: salt water reaching a high-voltage battery can cause electrical shorts, shock, or fire, and such vehicles should not be driven or charged until inspected by a qualified professional. AAA advised drivers encountering flooded streets to turn around rather than risk exposure.
