Supreme Court to Hear Montgomery County, MD Magnet School Admissions Case
The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday, Oct. 19, to hear a case challenging admissions policies at four selective magnet middle schools in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Association for Education Fairness alleges the district's policy disadvantages Asian American students while boosting Black and Latino enrollment, following a decade-old shift that factored poverty levels into admissions. The court will decide whether the parent group has sufficient evidence of discrimination to proceed; if it rules for the parents, the case returns to a lower court. The school system, serving more than 150,000 students, argues its current lottery-based plan is race-neutral. Arguments are expected in the coming months.
