University of Maryland Suspends Club Tennis Team Over Racist Imagery in Tournament Email
The University of Maryland suspended its club tennis team pending an investigation after Howard University's club president discovered imagery resembling Ku Klux Klan hoods in a Google document emailed to tournament participants before the UMD fall invitational held last Saturday and Sunday in College Park. The graphic appeared beneath the UMD club logo, replacing portions of the Crossland coat of arms on the Maryland flag. UMD Recreation and Wellness suspended the entire club, causing it to forfeit tournament matches, and referred the matter to the Office of Student Conduct. Howard University's club called for a public apology, an investigation into who created the document, sensitivity training, and a donation of tournament proceeds to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
