Retired SFPD Deputy Chief, Daughter Killed in Marin Co. Murder-Suicide

San Francisco Police Department retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and her 24-year-old daughter Katherine were killed Sunday afternoon at their home on Strawberry Circle in the Strawberry neighborhood near Mill Valley, Marin County. Authorities identified the suspected shooter as Mannix's husband, former SFPD Sgt. Kevin Mannix, 68, in what investigators described as a double murder-suicide. Marin County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire shortly after 5 p.m. and found three deceased individuals inside the residence. Ann Mannix was the first woman to join and lead the SFPD SWAT team before retiring in 2021; she is survived by two adult children. Authorities confirmed no ongoing public threat, with autopsies scheduled for Tuesday and motive not yet released.

Record Beef Prices Fail to Offset Rising Diesel Costs for Marin and Sonoma Ranchers

Marin County rancher Loren Poncia of Stemple Creek Ranch reports that while meat prices rose roughly 30% over three years, his operating costs climbed about 50%, with diesel hitting a record $8.96 per gallon in San Rafael on Sept. 21. The Trump administration's August proclamation allowing up to 300,000 metric tons of duty-free beef imports through Nov. 30 drew criticism from local producers and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, while Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioner Andrew Smith warned the imports would threaten local ranchers already squeezed by fuel costs. Cattle and calves values across Marin ($23M), Sonoma ($15.5M), and Solano ($65.4M) counties rose 29% in 2025 to $104 million, though producers like Joe Pozzi of Valley Ford's Pozzi Ranch note California diesel prices remain the nation's highest.
