California Highway Patrol officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Road 28 1/2 and Avenue 15 in Madera County on October 4 just after 6 p.m. A 32-year-old Madera man driving a Mercedes-Benz failed to stop at a posted stop sign and struck a Nissan Altima that had the right-of-way, causing the Mercedes to overturn into a brick wall in front of a residence. The 25-year-old Nissan driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene despite life-saving measures; a 17-year-old passenger was transported to Valley Children's Hospital with minor injuries. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, according to CHP. The Mercedes driver, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested on scene and booked into Madera County Jail under various charges.

In a Fresno federal courtroom on Friday, Oct. 10, attorneys for the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians and the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians argued over whether the new North Fork Mono Casino and Resort on Highway 99 can open as planned later this month. The Picayune tribe contends that California voters' 2014 rejection of a state gaming compact annulled the concurrence required for off-reservation gaming, while North Fork attorneys argue the federal government's 2011–2012 determinations remain valid and that similar challenges have already failed in court. Judge Kirk E. Sherriff has not yet ruled on whether to issue a preliminary injunction blocking the casino, which promises approximately 1,500 jobs for Madera County residents.
