Lodi Residents Vote in Three Congressional Races Nov. 3 After Prop. 50 Redistricting

Due to Proposition 50 redistricting, Lodi residents will vote in three separate U.S. House races on Nov. 3: Districts 7, 8, and 9. In the June primary, incumbents Josh Harder (District 9) and John Garamendi (District 8) won decisive victories, while District 7 saw Sacramento City Council member Mai Vang narrowly outpoll incumbent Doris Matsui by about 4,500 votes. Prop. 50, which passed statewide with 64.4% support but only 54.1% in San Joaquin County, split the county into five congressional districts and replaced Lodi's prior single-district representation under Harder. Candidates in all three races addressed cost-of-living concerns in final campaign statements to the News-Sentinel.

The Lodi City Council approved removing parking along 150 feet of Turner Road east of Bridgetowne Drive (about seven spaces) and along Stockton Street near Idlewild Drive (about 13 spaces) to improve sightlines at those intersections. In downtown Lodi, the Mud Mill pottery-painting shop changed owners as of Oct. 1 after 23 years under founder Vicki Snell, and Supreme Meat Market on Ham Lane became Mi Carniceria Prime Meat Market.

Death Penalty Trial in Lodi-Area Triple Homicide Postponed

A San Joaquin County Superior Court judge on Monday postponed the death penalty trial of Steven Anthony Guerrero, 27, a Stockton man accused of killing Joe Pena, Kim Huynh, and Alfred Nguyen during a home invasion south of Lodi in May 2024. The trial had been set for Jan. 4, 2027, but defense attorneys requested more time to prepare a mitigation investigation, citing an expert unavailable until after the first of the year. Judge Patrick Smalling agreed to the delay and ordered defense counsel to propose a new start date at a hearing the following Monday, stating he would not accept a date more than one year out. Prosecutors allege Guerrero was lying in wait during a burglary when he shot the three victims; he also faces charges including first-degree burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
