Polk County Sheriff Arrests 19 Gang Members in Drive-By Shooting Investigation

The Polk County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 19 gang members connected to a series of drive-by shootings and violent inter-gang attacks involving five gangs, primarily in Winter Haven, Haines City, and the Waverly area. The arrests stem from an investigation launched in July 2023 into retaliatory violence that began with the May 2021 murder of Dyreon Outsey and escalated through November 2023, including a fatal stabbing at a Publix in Winter Haven. The Violent Gang Investigative Task Force (VGITF), created in February 2023 as a multi-agency effort involving local police, FDLE, ATF Tampa, FBI Tampa, and the 10th Judicial Circuit attorneys, reports a 30% reduction in gang-related shootings since its inception. Sheriff Judd stated that 144 gang members have been arrested overall by the task force, with 57 firearms recovered.
