Lakeland Water Utilities Mails Leak Notices After Smart Meter Detection
The City of Lakeland Water Utilities Department launched a proactive leak-detection initiative in October 2026, mailing continuous-flow notification letters to households where smart water meters detected 72 hours of uninterrupted water flow. The department says a continuous overnight flow indicates an undetected leak and aims to help residents conserve water, prevent property damage, and lower utility bills. Customers receiving a notice are instructed to inspect faucets, appliances, irrigation systems, and their meter box for active flow indicators. Repairs from the meter to the home are the customer's responsibility; leaks inside the meter box itself should be reported to Lakeland Customer Service at (863) 834-9535.
