South Monterey County High School District Exits State Receivership After Nearly 15 Years
The South Monterey County Joint Union High School District celebrated its return to full local control on Sept. 30 at King City High School, following nearly 15 years of state and county receivership triggered by severe financial distress. The milestone followed full repayment of an emergency state loan and demonstrated compliance with FCMAT fiscal standards, per State Superintendent Tony Thurmond and Monterey County Superintendent Deneen Guss. District leaders adopted new governance policies including mandatory CSBA training for board members and a commitment to FCMAT financial-planning standards. A proposed reorganization consolidating the region's three school districts into two unified TK-12 districts serving Greenfield and King City will go before voters in November.
