Humboldt County Registrar Says DOJ Ballot Letter Contains Nothing Actionable

Humboldt County Registrar of Voters Juan Pablo Cervantes said a U.S. Department of Justice letter received Monday demanding 48-hour verification of ballots sent to listed individuals contains nothing actionable and will not change the county's ballot processing. The letter, signed by U.S. Attorney Craig H. Missakian, asked the office to identify non-citizens among voters on an attached list and provide registration documents. Cervantes noted that new state election code could extend voting hours if federal law enforcement activity occurs within 100 to 200 feet of polling locations, potentially delaying results reporting countywide. As of Wednesday noon, the office had received 18,205 ballots, approximately 5,000 ahead of the primary election pace. Cervantes encouraged voters with concerns about mail delivery to drop ballots at designated boxes or vote in person.

Driver Pleads Guilty in Fatal Rio Dell Crash; Sentencing Dec. 15

Ocean Del Castillo, 24, pleaded guilty Wednesday to vehicular manslaughter in the Oct. 28, 2025 head-on collision on U.S. Highway 101 near Rio Dell that killed 19-year-old Anisha Gutshall. Del Castillo appeared at Humboldt County Courthouse Courtroom No. 5 under a no-bail hold after his bail was revoked following an Oct. 14 arrest for cocaine possession. A civil case naming Del Castillo and nitrous oxide manufacturer Ramdon Corporation proceeds concurrently, with the family alleging he was under the influence of nitrous oxide at the time—a claim denied by Del Castillo and his attorney. Judge Lawrence Killoran accepted the plea as an open plea; the District Attorney's office will present aggravating factors at sentencing Dec. 15.
